Pro-Animal Endorsements for Portland City Council

A Once-in-a-lifetime Election

This November, Portland’s city government will undergo a total overhaul: it’s introducing ranked-choice voting, a much bigger city council, and voting in districts. With virtually no incumbents in the race, this is a unique opportunity to elect progressive city councilors who will make Portland a leader in pro-animal policy.

A coalition of animal rights groups in Portland came together to endorse candidates for city council, including Animal Rights Collective Portland (ARCPDX), Compassionate PDX, Veggies Do it Better Events, and Pro-Animal Future.

Endorsements

Our endorsement process consisted of a questionnaire and interview. These sought the candidates’ interest in supporting several pro-animal policies in Portland, including a green food policy (to increase the proportion of plant-based food bought by the city), a ban on the city’s use of rodenticide, inclusion of animals in disaster shelters and homeless shelters, and bans on some of the most cruel animal products, including fur and foie gras.

Endorsed candidates indicated a willingness to support policies in each area listed above. To determine the order in which we list the endorsed candidates, we weighed equally the strength and breadth of candidates’ support for the policies with our perception of their viability as candidates, which is informed by fundraising, other endorsements, and volunteer power. We recommend that pro-animal voters rank candidates in the order listed.
